How to play

  1. Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 5 countries.
  2. Type a country’s name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country under another letter clears the box, with a note saying which letter it is under.
  3. Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.

More about the countries that start with O, Q, Y or Z (names some answers)

Oman, Qatar and Yemen are on the Arabian Peninsula: Oman and Yemen share a border, and Qatar is a peninsula of its own in the Persian Gulf. Zambia and Zimbabwe share the Zambezi river and Victoria Falls.

Which countries count

A country is under the first letter of the name used on this site, ignoring accents. The two Congos are both under C, where most lists put them. Territories and dependencies aren’t answers, and land outside the quiz is shown in a lighter shade.

Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.

The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.

Questions

Why do O, Q, Y and Z share a quiz?

Each has only one or two countries, too few for a quiz of their own. Every other letter has at least three.

Does any country start with W or X?

No. Wales is a country within the United Kingdom, not a sovereign state, and Western Sahara is a disputed territory, so neither is an answer in this series.
