How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 13 states.
- Type a name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a state that doesn’t border Canada clears the box, with a note.
- Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.
About the border
The border between the United States and Canada is the longest between two countries, about 8,900 km. Much of it follows the 49th parallel across the plains; in the east it runs through four of the five Great Lakes and along rivers, and in the far north-west it separates the largest state from a Canadian territory and a province.
Edge cases (names some answers)
Ohio and Pennsylvania meet Canada only in the middle of Lake Erie. Alaska has the longest stretch, about 2,475 km, with Yukon and British Columbia. Minnesota’s Northwest Angle is the only part of the lower 48 north of the 49th parallel. Maine borders only one other state, and Canada on three sides.
Which states count
A state counts if the international boundary touches it, on land or through one of the Great Lakes. Two states meet Canada only in Lake Erie; most lists count them, and so does this quiz.
Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.
The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.

Questions
Why don’t Wisconsin, Illinois or Indiana count?
The international boundary in the Great Lakes doesn’t reach their waters: Wisconsin’s part of Lake Superior stops short of it, and the lake that Illinois and Indiana are on lies entirely in the United States.
