How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 21 countries.
- Type a name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country without a Mediterranean coast clears the box, with a note.
- Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.
About the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea touches three continents and is joined to the Atlantic by a strait only 14 km wide. Its arms have names of their own, from the Adriatic to the Aegean, and since 1869 a canal has linked it to the Red Sea. The countries on its shores range from one of the world’s largest by area to one of its smallest.
More about the countries (names some answers)
Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Greece are in Europe; Türkiye, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon and Israel in Asia; Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco in Africa. Greece has the longest Mediterranean coastline, with its islands, and Monaco the shortest, under 4 km. Malta and Cyprus are islands; Bosnia and Herzegovina reaches the sea only at Neum.
Which countries count
A country counts if it is sovereign and its own coast is on the Mediterranean or one of its arms, such as the Adriatic and the Aegean. Palestine’s coast is the Gaza Strip, which most lists of the 21 leave out, so it isn’t an answer here. Gibraltar and the British bases on a Mediterranean island don’t make the United Kingdom one.
Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.
The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
