How to play
- Press Start. You have 3 minutes for all 45 countries.
- Type a name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country with a coast clears the box, with a note.
- Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.
About landlocked countries
A landlocked country has no coast on the ocean or a sea open to it, so its trade has to cross a neighbour. Forty-five countries on this site are landlocked, on four continents; none is in North America or Oceania. A few are entirely surrounded by a single other country.
More about the countries (names some answers)
Africa has the most, 16, from Mali and Niger to Lesotho and Eswatini. South America has two, Bolivia and Paraguay. Kazakhstan is the largest and Ethiopia the most populous. Lesotho, San Marino and Vatican City are each enclaved by one country. Uzbekistan and Liechtenstein are doubly landlocked: every neighbour is landlocked too.
Which countries count
A landlocked country has no coast on the ocean or a sea connected to it. Countries on the Caspian Sea, a lake with no outlet, count as landlocked. Partially recognised countries among the 197 on this site count too. Countries with only a few kilometres of coast are not landlocked; typing one says where its coast is.
Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.
The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.

Questions
Why do the Caspian countries count?
The Caspian Sea is a lake with no outlet to the ocean, so a coast on it doesn’t open a country to the sea.
