How to play
- Press Start. You have 4 minutes, and the flags come in a new order every game.
- Type the country of the highlighted flag. It counts as soon as the name matches, and the next flag lights up.
- Only the highlighted flag counts: type another country and you’re told it isn’t that one. Tap a flag, or press Tab, to switch.
- When time is up, the missed flags turn red, and you can practice them.
About the flags of Asia
Asia’s flags are as varied as the continent. In the east, several rest on one bold symbol: Japan’s red disc, the circle and four black trigrams of South Korea, the gold stars of China and Vietnam. Further south and west, many carry a sun, a wheel, a building or an animal, such as the wheel at the center of India’s flag, Bhutan’s white dragon, Sri Lanka’s lion with a sword and the temple of Angkor Wat on Cambodia’s.
West Asia shares two traditions. The pan-Arab colors, red, white, black and green, run in different combinations through the flags of Jordan, Palestine, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. A crescent, often with a star or stars, appears on Türkiye’s flag and on those of Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Maldives.
Some of the hardest are the plainest. Red over white is the whole of Indonesia’s flag, and Singapore’s is the same with a crescent and stars in one corner. Shape helps too: Qatar’s flag is more than two and a half times as long as it is tall, and the quiz draws every flag to its true proportions.
Which flags are in the quiz
The same countries as in Countries of Asia, including those that span Asia and Europe, whose flags are in both quizzes: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Türkiye. Taiwan and Palestine are included, as in the countries quiz; Hong Kong and Macao are part of China, so their flags aren’t.
Spelling and alternative names
Capitals, accents and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling has to be right. Well-known alternative names count too:
| Country | Also accepted |
|---|---|
| Brunei | Brunei Darussalam |
| China | People's Republic of China |
| Kyrgyzstan | Kyrgyz Republic |
| Laos | Lao PDR |
| Myanmar | Burma |
| North Korea | DPRK, Democratic People's Republic of Korea |
| Palestine | State of Palestine |
| Russia | Russian Federation |
| South Korea | Republic of Korea |
| Timor-Leste | East Timor |
| Türkiye | Turkey |
| United Arab Emirates | UAE, Emirates |
| Vietnam | Viet Nam |
Look-alike flags
Asia’s look-alikes are mostly simple flags with one small difference. These are the ones to check twice. The list shows each flag with its name, so it starts closed.
Show the look-alike flags
Indonesia and Singapore
Red over white, both 2 by 3. Indonesia’s flag has nothing more. Singapore’s adds a white crescent and five white stars in the red, near the flagpole.
Jordan and Palestine
Black, white and green stripes with a red triangle at the flagpole, both 1 by 2. Jordan’s triangle carries a small white seven-pointed star; Palestine’s is plain.
Iraq and Yemen
Red, white and black, top to bottom. Yemen’s flag is just the three stripes. Iraq’s has the words Allahu Akbar in green Arabic script on the white. Egypt’s, in Flags of Africa, has a gold eagle there instead.
Questions
Which flag isn’t a rectangle?
Nepal’s: two stacked pennants with a moon and a sun, the only national flag of that shape. It is drawn to its true outline, so in the grid it is the narrow one.
Are Türkiye’s and Russia’s flags in Flags of Europe too?
Yes. Both countries span the two continents, so their flags are in both quizzes, each with its own scores and best time.
