How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 23 countries, listed in alphabetical order with their capitals blank.
- Type a capital. It counts as soon as it matches and fills in next to its country; a capital from another continent clears the box, with a note saying whose it is.
- When the time is up, the list shows the capitals you missed and the map shows their countries in red.
About the capitals of North America
The continent’s capitals range from a planned federal district to harbour towns of a few thousand people. The three big countries are the easy part. Central America’s seven capitals are mostly highland cities, and one of them is a planned town built inland after a hurricane in 1961 devastated the old capital on the coast.
The Caribbean is harder. Many capitals are small port towns named after saints, kings or the ports themselves, and two capitals on different islands differ by a single letter, so type carefully. Territories aren’t in the list: Puerto Rico, Greenland and the other dependencies have capitals of their own, but they aren’t countries.

Belize: Belmopan; Belize City, the old capital, isn’t accepted. Jamaica: Kingston. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: Kingstown. United States: Washington, D.C., or Washington. Two capitals begin with St.: St. John’s (Antigua and Barbuda) and St. George’s (Grenada); two with Port: Port-au-Prince (Haiti) and Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago).
What counts
The same countries as in Countries of North America: the UN’s grouping, including Central America and the Caribbean. Any capital a country officially names counts, and so does the city where its government works when that is somewhere else; capitals, accents and punctuation don’t matter. Questions
Do I need to type the full name of the US capital?
No. The short form is enough, and so is the full one; punctuation doesn’t matter.
Is Canada’s capital its largest city?
No. Canada’s capital was chosen in the 19th century, partly as a compromise between the English- and French-speaking parts of the country.
