About the biggest cities
The largest US city has more than twice the people of the second. The 50 biggest are spread across 27 states and the capital, but one state alone has nine of them and another has six, many of them in its fast-growing Sun Belt. Rankings use people inside the city limits, so a city that covers its whole county ranks high and an old city hemmed in by suburbs ranks low.
More about the ranking (names some answers)
New York City has 8.6 million people, more than Los Angeles and Chicago combined. California has nine cities in the top 50 and Texas six. Jacksonville is the largest city by area in the lower 48 states, since it merged with its county in 1968. Atlanta and Miami rank below 35th though their metropolitan areas are among the ten largest.
What counts
Cities are ranked by the people living inside the city limits, from the US Census Bureau’s estimates for 1 July 2025, not by metropolitan area. That is why some famous cities rank lower than their region’s size suggests. The national capital is ranked like a city. A city outside the 50 clears the box with a note.
Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.
The accepted alternative forms appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
