Double Drop

Drop numbered blocks into five columns. Equal blocks that touch join into one bigger block, and joins can set off chains. Keep every column below the top.

Free Double Drop, no sign-up

Double Drop is a number merge game you can play online for free, with nothing to install and no account. The board has five columns, seven blocks high. You choose where each numbered block falls, equal blocks that touch join into bigger ones, and one good drop can set off a chain of joins.

Play with a tap, a click or the keyboard. Your game is saved in this browser after every drop, so you can close the tab and carry on later.

How to play

  1. A block worth 32, 64, 128 or 256 waits above the board. Tap or click a column to drop it there. It lands on top of that column’s stack.
  2. Equal blocks that touch, side by side or one on top of the other, join into one block. Two blocks double: two 64s make 128. Three make four times the value, and four make eight times.
  3. The joined block appears where the block that just arrived is, and the blocks above any gap fall down. If that brings equal blocks together, they join too: a chain.
  4. A block may land in the top row if a join clears it at once. The game ends when a column is still full to the top after a drop.
  5. New blocks start at 32 to 256. Once you make a 4K block they move up to 64 to 512, at 8K to 128 to 1K, and so on: the smallest new block is your highest block divided by 64. When they move up, every block below the new smallest one is cleared.

Large values are shortened on the blocks: 1K is 1,024 and 1M is 1,048,576.

Scoring

Each join adds the new block’s value to your score: two 64s make 128 and score 128. Bigger joins pay more than the same joins one at a time. Three 64s make a 256 in one go, where two separate joins would leave you a 128 and a spare 64. In a chain, every join scores. When new blocks move up, the blocks that are cleared add their values too. Your best score, highest block and longest chain are kept in Statistics.

Strategy

Keep your biggest blocks in one corner

Pick a bottom corner and build your largest blocks there. A big block in the middle column splits the board, and small blocks get trapped on both sides of it with nothing to join.

Drop where you want the result

A join always lands where the block that just arrived or just fell is. To grow a block next to your big one, drop the matching block on the side nearest to it, so the bigger result ends up beside the block it should meet next.

Join three or four at once

Look for a spot where the new block touches two or three equal blocks at once, for example a gap between two 64s with a 64 below it. Dropping a 64 there makes 512 in one move, and it clears more of the board than joining pairs.

Set up chains

A joined block falls into any gap below it, and it can join again where it lands. Keep a 128 under a pair of 64s that are about to join, and the new 128 drops onto it to make 256. Two or three steps like this in one drop are where big scores come from.

Keep the columns low and even

A tall column has fewer places for the next block to go. Treat the top row as a safety margin, not as space: a block can only stay there if a join clears it at once.

Questions

Why did some small blocks disappear?

New blocks move up as your highest block grows. When they do, every block smaller than the new smallest one is cleared and its value is added to your score. The line under the board shows which blocks can come next.

Is Double Drop luck or skill?

Both. The next block is random: 32 four times in ten, 64 three times in ten, 128 twice and 256 once (later, the same shares of the higher values). Where you drop it decides whether it joins, starts a chain or blocks a column.

What is the highest block?

There isn’t one. Because the smallest blocks are cleared as you go, a careful game can keep doubling for a long time.

Can I see the next block?

Only the block you’re about to drop. There’s no queue of upcoming blocks, no hold and no undo.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Tap a column to drop the block there. The game fits a phone screen held upright.

Where is my game kept?

Only in this browser: the game in progress, your settings and your statistics. Nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing your browser’s site data removes them.
